What Water Baptism Is Not
Understanding what baptism does not represent
- Baptism is not required for salvation. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. We are saved by grace through faith, not by any work or ritual.
- Baptism is not an addition to salvation. It does not complete or enhance what Christ has already accomplished on the cross.
- Baptism is an act of obedience and love for Jesus. It is our response to His command and our way of publicly identifying with Him.
What Water Baptism Is
A biblical symbol of new life
- Water baptism is the full immersion in water , symbolizing a believer's identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- It is a public declaration that we have died to our old life of sin and have been raised to walk in newness of life through Christ.
- Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation , demonstrating to the world that we belong to Jesus and are committed to following Him.
“Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
— Romans 6:4
What Water Baptism Is
Buried with Christ, raised to new life
When we are immersed in water
, it symbolizes our burial with Christ. Just as Jesus died and was buried, we acknowledge that our old self—enslaved to sin—has died with Him.
As we rise from the water
, it represents our resurrection with Christ. We are raised to walk in newness of life, empowered by the Holy Spirit to live for God’s glory.
Baptism declares our freedom from sin
and our commitment to a transformed life in Jesus. It is a beautiful picture of the gospel—death, burial, and resurrection—lived out in the life of every believer.
“Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
— Colossians 2:12
